Origin - Synthetic evaluation gym

A bounded gym where a fast proposer is checked by a deterministic verifier and a ground-truth oracle.

Gemma proposes · Origin verifies · the oracle is the judge — a bounded synthetic evaluation gym, not production robot certification.
Honest boundary: room-type classification is structural reading, while the v1 safety policy recovers the oracle from raw geometry. The full 36-feature perfect score is an oracle-recovery upper bound, not the headline. The budget pass is the learned mixed-holdout policy result; the reachability pass is an oracle-recovery upper bound because safe_reach_* is a precomputed flood-fill feature matching the oracle's own reachability check. Cerebras/Gemma mines hard cases; Origin's deterministic oracle labels them. Nothing here certifies a physical robot.

what each source is allowed to prove

Three lanes, three different claims

The same score can mean different things depending on rights. Research-only rows can support papers and prototype demos; commercial-safe synthetic rows can support product-development demos; customer-owned rows are the path to real deployment evidence. The lane gate fails if research-only data is treated as commercial-safe.

Natural refuse requires the customer-owned lane: real customer maps with real restricted zones, human-only areas, or operational hazards. Current CubiCasa-derived natural v1 has no refuse support.

Hazard augmentation nuance: the method is commercial-safe when applied to owned/procedural maps; the current on-disk hazard rows inherit CubiCasa-derived parent rights and stay research-lane.

Synthetic policy evaluation

Origin-owned synthetic demo with declared restricted zones

Synthetic demo: verdict and calibration path

Origin-owned synthetic demo. This v1 slice is compiled from an Origin-owned synthetic demo customer floor with declared hazards, human-only cells, and restricted zones, so it exercises the commercial-safe customer-owned path without real customer data. The deterministic oracle labels every row. Bounded Gym result, not certification.

Finish tasks over-refusedoracle finish → policy refuse12
Escalate tasks over-refusedoracle escalate → policy refuse12
Refuse tasks correctly refuseddemo-defined restricted/hazard zones12

Why this matters: Origin does not hide a weak policy behind a good-looking average. The synthetic demo shows the model over-refuses: it refuses every hazard-crossing task the oracle flags — and also too many valid finish/escalate tasks.

Calibration plan

The saved budget policy clears every refuse gate but over-refuses on this synthetic demo site. Add more synthetic finish and escalate examples, especially reachable non-restricted tasks, blocked-path escalation tasks, and safe completion tasks near but not inside restricted zones.

Honest read: Policy catches demo-defined refuse cases but over-refuses finish/escalate tasks. This synthetic evaluation records conservative behavior under the oracle and the need for calibration before live authority.

Synthetic calibration loop

evaluation-only synthetic rows, authorization-gated training

Calibration needed → calibration generated

Origin-owned synthetic evaluation slice. These 84 rows target the observed over-refusal failure mode with reachable finish tasks, non-refuse escalation tasks, and hard restricted-zone refusals. The oracle labels every row; no model-generated labels are accepted. Training remains blocked until the customer explicitly authorizes it.

Next action: train only after the customer authorization file flips training_allowed:true and includes an approval artifact. Until then, this is calibration evidence and an eval harness, not a trained customer policy.

Honest read: the saved learned policy clears the refuse gates but over-refuses on this customer slice. The candidate shows the calibration data has the right information to reduce false refusals while preserving FAR/refuse-recall gates, but it is deliberately labeled as a deterministic not-trained candidate.

Synthetic learned-policy gate

authorization-gated training, held-out synthetic demo rows

Learned candidate evaluated under synthetic-demo authorization

Training is authorization-gated. This candidate trains only on the synthetic calibration train split (historical schema: CUSTOMER_OWNED), selects on validation, and reports final metrics only on held-out synthetic demo rows. It learns over compact map-derived route summaries, not raw spatial perception. The deterministic rule harness stays separate and not-trained. Passing this gate is limited bounded-Gym evidence, not certification.

Counterfactual robustness gate

broader restricted-zone diagnostics, separate from customer-demo readiness

Synthetic site thresholds passed; broader diagnostics are separately gated

The learned candidate passes the reviewed synthetic customer site but the current broader diagnostic is gated separately. If the generic restricted-zone slice fails, broader learned-policy claims stay blocked. Origin converts misses into hard-case curriculum before expanding autonomy scope.
